Publishing, Content ID, smart links and more.

• What does Publishing Administration do? — It registers your songs with collection societies worldwide and collects songwriter/performance royalties from broadcasts, public play, streams and sync that distribution alone doesn’t capture.
• What is Content ID? — Content ID protects your recordings on YouTube, TikTok, Meta (Facebook/Instagram) and SoundCloud: the platforms fingerprint your music, detect other videos and posts that use it, and monetize those uses — paying the revenue back to you. It’s sold as one bundle per release, $15/year for all four platforms.
• What are pre-save campaigns and smart links? — A pre-save lets fans save your release before it’s out so it lands in their library on day one; a smart link is one shareable page that routes each listener to their preferred store.
• What is Priority / Fast delivery? — A faster turnaround add-on for when you need a release queued to stores sooner than the standard lead time.
• How is publishing royalty different from streaming royalty? — Streaming royalty (master recording) is what Spotify/Apple pays whoever owns the recording. Publishing royalty is paid to the songwriter — the composer/lyricist of the song. They’re two completely separate income streams, and Spilix helps you collect both.
• I already use Spilix distribution. Do I need Publishing Admin separately? — Yes. Distribution collects master royalty. Publishing Admin collects publishing royalty — a different income stream. If you’re a songwriter, you’re missing 30-50% of potential income without it.
• I’m not the primary songwriter. Should I still sign up for Publishing Admin? — If you have at least one co-write credit, yes. You still get a % of publishing royalty based on the songwriter split.
• What is the 15% publishing commission applied to? — Only to publishing royalties actually collected. If Spilix collects nothing, you owe no commission.
• Can I register older works with Publishing Admin? — Yes. Submit your entire catalog. Spilix registers them retroactively — past royalties already collected can’t be recalled, but everything from the registration point forward will be collected.
• What is Content ID? How is it different from copyright takedown? — Content ID is an audio fingerprint matching system. When someone uploads content using your track (full song or a snippet), the platform auto-recognizes it and claims revenue for you. Different from takedown — you’re not removing their video, you’re taking a revenue share.
• I already enabled Content ID on YouTube directly. Do I need Spilix? — If you already have a YouTube partner or claim directly, keep it. Spilix Content ID is for artists without direct partnerships, or who want to expand to TikTok/Meta/SoundCloud — platforms that are hard to claim directly.
• How long until I start earning Content ID revenue? — After 7-14 days of enrollment, the fingerprint propagates to platforms. Auto-claim then kicks in for all new UGC. Older content may be claimed retroactively over 30-90 days.
• My track isn’t viral. Is Content ID worth enrolling? — Yes. Content ID doesn’t require virality — it just needs someone to use your track. The bundle at $15/release/year is very cheap; just a few uses cover the cost, and it insures across all 4 platforms.
• I covered someone else’s song. Can I enroll Content ID? — No. Content ID requires you to own both master + composition rights. For covers, you need a Cover License (separate add-on) and cannot claim Content ID because you don’t own the composition.
• What if I cancel Content ID? — You can turn off auto-renew for a release’s Content ID at any time from the dashboard. Enrollment stays active until the end of the 12 months you’ve paid for (add-on fees are non-refundable) and simply isn’t renewed after that. Once it expires, the fingerprint is removed from the platforms within 14-30 days; royalties already collected are paid out in full.
• Is there a fee to claim my artist profile? — No. Claims are free — included in every Spilix plan. You just need at least 1 release distributed via Spilix.
• I already have a YouTube channel. What does OAC do? — OAC merges your topic channel (auto-generated) into your main channel, adds an official Music shelf, Latest Releases tab, and verified badge. Your channel stays the same — just gets more features.
• If I already claimed Spotify for Artists directly, what does Spilix do? — Nothing needed. If already claimed directly, keep it. Spilix just helps artists who haven’t claimed yet or are having trouble with the process.
• How long do profile claims take? — Spotify: 24-48h. Apple: 48-72h. YouTube OAC: 7-14 days (Google’s review process is longer).
